Fowey, pronounced ‘Foy’, situated on the South coast of the county in-between Mevagissey and Looe is a pretty, bustling harbour town which offers everything you would expect from a town in the beautiful Cornish Riviera.
Designated as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this historic maritime town, which is a popular area for sailing enthusiasts and tourists alike is often visited by yachts and even cruise ships.
There are many leisure activities here to keep you occupied. Take a gentle stroll along the esplanade, or in the town’s quaint narrow streets where the charming galleries and shops display many local art works. Enticing cafes and inns offer all types of cuisine from traditional fish and chips and the famous Cornish pasty to a gourmet dinner for two.
If you are feeling energetic, walk west through the town to St. Catherine’s point and the castle ruins where you can overlook the harbour entrance. If you enjoy walking there are many routes in and around Fowey, namely the popular ‘Hallwalk’ – a circular route that follows the river banks and utilises both ferries via Bodinnick, Pont Creek and Polruan with beautiful views across the estuary mouth and Fowey itself.
This very unique place, which has been home to many prominent people over the years, was much loved by the writer Daphne Du Maurier who lived in Fowey in her early twenties whilst writing The Loving Spirit published in 1931. For those wanting more information the Du Maurier Literary Centre in Fore Street is well worth a visit. Alternatively visit in May to enjoy the reputed and very popular Du Maurier festival.
