Helston lies at the western gateway to the Lizard Peninsula, an ancient coinage town, home to the annual Floral festival with the Furry dance dating back to pre-christian traditions; a traditional Cornish town with its regency houses and The Loe - the largest freshwater lake in Cornwall south of the town.
Helston was one of five ancient ‘stannage towns’ in cornwall where tin ingots were assessed and stamped before being sold. This past tradition is remembered in the name of Coinagehall Street – ‘coigne’ or the corner of a tin ingot which was cut off to be checked for quality.
The Helston Folk museum is home to many interesting artefacts which cite the history and geography of Helston and surrounding area. Admission is free.
The town itself has a Victorian Guildhall and a beautiful Regency church, as well as many interesting shops including a traditional book shop specialising in all things Cornish. Lining the streets are ‘kennels’ – delightful streams running down either side of Coinagehall Street, Wendron Street, Church Street, adding to the character of the town. Here on the streets, the annual May Flora festival is held – a festival awash with colour, dancing and music.
Originally Helston was a thriving port until the 13th century when a shingle ridge now called the ‘Looe bar’ formed across the River Cober estuary, creating the biggest freshwater lake in Cornwall behind it. Today much of the area around the lake is owned by The National Trust, making it ideal for wonderful walks with spectacular views.
Helston makes a great base for exploring the rest of the Lizard Peninsula. The Royal Navy Air Station Culdrose is two miles southwest of the town and is the largest helicopter base in Europe with an air day held annually in July.
