Mevagissey has a good choice of cottages to rent for the New Year and Christmas.

Mevagissey is an enchanting and unspoilt fishing village which is bound to impress the first time, traveller. The picturesque double harbour (the ‘inner’ and ‘outer’) is where the centre of village life bustles – here soak up the atmosphere whilst trawlers come in with their day’s catch and visitors take boat trips around the bay.

Mevagissey, like many Cornish villages in the past, relied heavily upon the sea and the fishing industry. Today it is still very much a working fishing port welcoming many visiting boats and yachts.

Walk along the narrow, winding streets and you will find quaint shops, galleries and bookshops. There is a great choice of places to eat, from the customary fish and chips or Cornish pasty to a traditional wholesome meal at an inn such as The Fountain which dates from the 15th century. For those in search of a fabulous beach, head to nearby Gorran Haven or Portmellon.

In the old boathouse is the Mevagissey museum with fascinating maritime exhibits and historical photographs. Alternatively for train enthusiasts the Mevagissey World of Model Railways is well worth a visit.

If all this doesn’t keep you busy then nearby are the towns of Fowey, St Austell and Truro as well as attractions such as the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the famous Eden Project - which is certainly worth a visit if you manage to find the time.
