On the peninsula of the Cornish coastline lies the capital of West Cornwall and ancient market town, of Penzance. Only ten miles from Land’s End this town is surrounded by outstanding natural beauty and Celtic mystique.

Situated in the beautiful Mounts Bay which stretches from Land’s End to Lizard point, this body of water is dominated by St. Michaels Mount, a spectacular island castle, just separated from Marazion – one of the oldest towns in the county. The area’s history of smuggling and legend with its coastline of caves and coves, inspired Gilbert and Sullivan to name one of their most famous productions "The Pirates of Penzance".

There are a host of activities in and around Penzance to keep you busy. The area is excellent for walkers, with its cliffs and moorlands, and as well marked footpaths and bridleways- scattered with prehistoric relics dotted all across the landscape.

Named ‘Pen sans’ in the ancient Cornish language, the town centre offers a wide range of amenities and retail facilities as well as a host of great cafes and restaurants offering some of the best Cornish food and drink to be had in this part of the peninsular. At night Penzance comes alive and entertainment is varied and caters for most tastes.

For a taste of the history in this area go to Penlee House Gallery & Museum in the centre of Penzance which has an extensive display of local archaeological artefacts and a range of exhibits illustrating the life and social history of West Cornwall. Architecturally Penzance is home to some stylish and interesting Regency and Georgian terraced buildings, all adding to the charm of this town.

Nearby are the pretty town of St.Ives with the Tate gallery, Flambards theme park in Helston and the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek. Penzance is also the embarking point for trips to the Isles of Scilly.
