At the gateway to Devon, the quiet country town of Cullompton, meaning ‘tun’ (town) on the Culm, is situated in a beautiful river valley, just off Junction 28 on the M5.
Cullompton has a variety of shops and amenities one would expect from a bustling town of this size. It has a range of restaurants, inns and pubs which cater for all tastes and budgets. The pannier market selling local crafts and produce is held on Wednesdays in the centre of town at the Bull Ring.

Historically Cullompton’s wealth originated from the local wool and cloth trade. In 1838 a fire destroyed a large number of buildings in the town, although some of the original Georgian buildings which survived remain in the town centre.
Cullompton has many buildings of interest including the magnificent St Andrews church, situated in the heart of the town and reputed to be one of the most beautiful parish churches in Devon. The church is home to a very rare wooden Golgotha, of mediaeval origin. T
he half timbered Elizabethan Manor House, now a hotel, is located in Fore Street and was probably built in the16th century and is a fine example of architecture in this period.
The textile, lace and fabric industries flourished here in the 19th century and today some country homes and gardens in the Cullompton area such as Coldharbour Mill Working Wool Museum, were built by early mill owners and are open to the public.
Nearby castles including Hemyock Castle and others at Tiverton and Bickleigh display local historic exhibits and are open to the public.
