Set in the heart of rural Devon on the fringes of Dartmoor lies the market town of Okehampton. In an excellent location conveniently located on the route to Cornwall with the north and south Devon coasts easily accessible, Okehampton makes an ideal base. On the doorstep of Okehampton is the highest peak of Dartmoor – Yes Tor at over 600 m rising behind the town.

The town provides a range of shops including specialist shops, as well as three supermarkets. The original Victorian Arcade and Red Lion Yard will delight the visitor looking for individual stores, art galleries or quaint coffee shops. Every 3rd Saturday at the Charter Hall there is a Farmers Market, and a monthly Craft Fair.

Okehampton has established itself as a renowned walking centre due to its close proximity to the moors. As well as making an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area you can enjoy a historic train ride from Okehampton station to Meldon where you can walk across the viaduct for breathtaking views of the moor.

For the more active, Simmons park in Okehampton offers a range of sports facilities including tennis, squash and an indoor swimming pool. Further afield there is Ashbury Golf course, numerous fishing establishments and reservoirs, plus off road cycling and horseback riding.

Many of the buildings in Okehampton are of grey historic stone including the 1685 town hall. The Museum of Dartmoor Life, in a former mill with a restored water wheel, houses a number of photographs, documents and displays citing the history of this town and the moors.

To the West is Okehampton Castle – a 14th century structure dating back to Norman times, which was the largest medieval castle to be built in Devon. The main building was destroyed on orders by Henry VIII, yet the remains of the castle are still an inspiring and remarkable sight with commanding views of the River Okemont valley.
