The South Hams is a beautiful and relatively undiscovered region in south Devon, covering 342 square miles, located south of Dartmoor, east of Plymouth and south- west of Torquay. The name “hams” meaning in Anglo-Saxon “sheltered place” refers to its mild climate and protected position on the south coast of Devon.
With its sweeping beaches and private coves along the sixty miles of spectacular coastline encompassing it, this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has abundant wildlife at the freshwater lagoon of Slapton Sands in the south and reeds and marshland at Slapton Ley – 30. square miles of the South Hams have been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
From their sources on Dartmoor five rivers flow down towards the coast through the unspoilt South Hams countryside which is dotted with pretty hamlets and villages. Ivybridge which is often entitled the southern gateway to Dartmoor, is an attractive old mill town well worth a visit. Modbury a country town in the South Hams is a delight with its fine Georgian buildings, quaint shops selling local crafts and 13th century church.
Where the rivers meet the sea the beautiful sailing towns of Dartmouth, Salcombe and Kinsbridge await exploration. The South Hams has the best of both worlds – with the contrast of waterside and countryside being the essence of what makes the South Hams so special.
