Porlock is a picturesque and secluded coastal village which lies on the north Somerset coastl. Porlock is protected by the National Trust so remains unspoilt and retains its distinctive character appreciated by all visitors. Nestling between the hills of Exmoor this beautiful area has stunning views out to the Bristol Channel and Wales, and is a haven for walkers and wildlife spotters with its fascinating flora and fauna at the shingle ridge and marshes.

In Porlock village itself you will be greeted with a traditional warm welcome in the various shops, cafes, hotels and restaurants. Amongst the pastel washed houses, the winding street which leads to Porlock Bay and Weir, is notoriously narrow. Porlock Weir is a charming harbour with quaint cottages and the 14th century Ship Inn. Here you can watch the blacksmith and glass blower at work or take a leisurely walk along the shingle bar, taking in the breathtaking views. Culbone Church, which is the smallest complete parish church in England, is set in mystical woodland and can only be reached by foot from here.

Porlock also has some famous connections - Robert Southey stayed at the Ship Inn in 1798 and composed his sonnet later printed in the ‘Morning Post’ beginning "Porlock, thy verdant vale so fair to sight, Thy lofty hills, which furze and fern embrown….”. Wordsworth and Coleridge were equally inspired by Porlock - Coleridge’s famous poem “Kubla Khan”, was composed on a nearby farm.

Around the Porlock Vale area, there are many National Trust villages all with distinctive characters, and many with delicious tearooms. Recommended are Bossington and Horner - both picture postcard villages. Nearby is also the market town of Taunton.
